Zone Sieve Pinhole Dupes

Dupe - trick, deception, duplication

When I first received my package of pinhole plates from Skink, the first thing I did was mount them to my DSLR and shoot a few images off of my computer monitor. The images shown in the gallery were all shot using a Skink Pinhole Pancake™ Zone Sieve. The original images are from a collection of personal work that was previously shot with conventional lenses. The final pinhole (zone Sieve) images were treated to additional HDR processing within Photomatix Pro and textured using a variety of techniques. My goal was to produce a series of images that will eventually become digital photo paintings, which I intend to use for a follow-up article.

What is a Zone Sieve? Also referred to as a Pinhole Sieve.

A hybrid between a standard pinhole and a Zone Plate, the Zone Sieve is basically a piece of high-density film (called a plate) that is comprised of a series of circular transparent "openings" usually designed with a specific pattern. The pattern and size of the transparent openings are calculated to produce a desired focus and effect. The plate acts as a lens in that the light passing through the transparent holes produces a focused effect as it passes over the edges of the circles. Images taken with a Zone Sieve are soft and diffused compared to a normal pinhole result.
